Everything you need to know about installing your range cooker or stove safely and correctly.
Proper installation is crucial for the safe, efficient operation of any range cooker or stove. While we always recommend professional installation, understanding the requirements helps you prepare your kitchen and ask informed questions.
Before choosing a specific cooker, assess your property's capabilities:
All gas appliance work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. This legal requirement ensures your installation meets safety standards.
Gas range cooker installation typically involves connection to supply, pressure testing, isolation valve installation, flue connection, commissioning, and compliance certification.
Oil and gas heat storage cookers require appropriate flue provision. Options include conventional flue connection to existing chimney, power flue systems, or balanced flue for some models.
Stoves require either connection to a suitable existing chimney or installation of a new twin-wall insulated flue system.
Electrical connection requirements vary by cooker type:
Range cooker installation may require Building Regulations approval. The UK Government Building Regulations guidance provides detailed information on compliance requirements.
In England and Wales, HETAS self-certification replaces a building notice for registered solid-fuel and biomass installations; OFTEC registrants can also self-certify oil work. England's Approved Document J expects a same-room alarm for new or replacement fixed solid-fuel or oil appliances, positioned 1-3 m horizontally away. See the carbon monoxide alarm guide for the BS EN 50291-1:2018 standard and gas cooking-only exclusion.
We work with experienced installers familiar with all types of range cookers and stoves. Professional installation ensures compliance, safe operation, valid warranty, proper commissioning, and documentation.
